Kommer någon ihåg känslan av att gå in i en skivbutik och rota i backarna? Det finns säkert en och annan med gott om plats hemma som fortfarande gör det, när ni sen flyttar ihop med någon kommer det snabbt att tas ur er. Jag kan inte tänka mig något onödigare än att betala hyra för att husera en skivsamling år 2015. Men visst, det fanns något med att stå och gräva i backarna, dels att hitta det där fyndet man letat efter i flera år (och som det ibland visade sig, också redan köpt för flera år sen), men också det att upptäcka ny musik.
När man hittade ny musik var det sällan eller aldrig något som var helt okänt för en, utan det fanns en koppling till något man redan gillade. Kanske en sångare som gästade på en låt, en producent som gjort en skiva man hade eller bara en cover på en favoritlåt.
När mp3:ornat kom sopades all den informationen bort. Eftersom jag redan hade en enorm skivsamling behövdes det bara att man återskapade den digitalt för att ha fullt upp livet ut. Och sen se till att man hade (men sällan lyssnade på) samtliga skivor med sina favoritartister. Den där samlingen blev aldrig riktigt utnyttjad till fullo, det jag istället gjorde var att skapa spellistor som brändes till cd och spelades i bilen. En bra spellista ska innehålla ett antal favoriter på ett tema och sen några överraskningar. Att samla favoriterna går fort, men att leta upp överraskningarna krävde att man läste på lite och lyssnade igenom en massa plattor. Både roligt och tidskrävande.
Sen tog Spotify över mitt musiklyssnande och eftersom jag börjat springa på så mycket konserter med framför allt svenska artister är det också det jag lyssnat på mest, fastän det inte alls speglar min musiksmak egentligen. Spotify vill gärna tipsa mig om musik, men oftast undrar jag hur dom har tänkt. Jag kan heller inte förstå varför en artists Spotifysida får lov att blanda olika artister med samma namn. Jag förstår om dom inte har tid själva, men det borde ju ligga i skivbolagens intresse (de enda som har tjänat pengar på detta) att kurera sidorna. Och tipsar man om artister som jag kan tänkas gilla om jag lyssnar på Roxette t ex, kan ju Per Gessle, Marie Fredriksson, Gyllene Tider eller t o m Son of a Plumber vara intressantare för mig än Bonnie Tyler och Ace of Base.
Sen ett par veckor nu testar jag Apple Music gratis i tre månader, bara att uppgradera till senaste IOS och signa upp sig, (det ska även finnas till Android). Det finns en del buggar, speciellt för dom som hade en stor samling musik i iTunes innan, googla på det först, men det enda jag egentligen gjort är att använda mig av “För dig” där någon trevlig människa eller übersmart robot satt ihop spellistor som passar just mig.
Det som gör listorna så bra är att de dels är anpassade efter tiden på dygnet, typ lugnare musik på morgonen, men också innehåller just en massa favoritlåtar och några överraskningar. Utan favoriterna hade man förmodligen inte blivit sugen på att trycka på play, även om mitt förtroende för de här listorna ökar hela tiden. Jag har upptäckt mer ny musik än på flera år på de här veckorna, det känns riktigt kul med musik igen helt enkelt. Ett minus är väl i så fall just det här med svensk musik, det enda jag blivit tipsad om är Imperiet och Roxette. Jag gissar att det beror på vad man lyssnat på och att ju mer data man samlar om vad man vill lyssna på desto bättre kommer listorna att bli.
Does anyone remember the feeling of going to a record shop and flip among the discs? Surely some of you with plenty of space at home still do, as soon as you move in with someone that will be taken out of you. I can’t think of anything more unnecessary than playing rent to house a big record collection 2015. But there was something about record stores, to find that elusive record you had been looking for the last couple of years (and bought and forgotten years ago, as it often turned out), but also discovering new music.
Rarely did you find something that was completely new to you, most likely there was a connection to things you already liked. Maybe a singer guesting on a track, a producer that had done a record you liked or just a cover of a favorite song.
When the mp3’s came all that information was swept away. Since I already had an enormous record collection all I had to do was duplicate it digitally and I’d be set for life. Then adding every record each of my favorite artists had done, made the collection bigger, but rarely played. What I did was create playlists, burn them to cd and listen in the car. A good playlist should contain a lot of favorites and then a few surprises. To collect the favorites are quickly done, but finding the surprises took some research, both fun and time consuming.
Later Spotify took over how I listened to music and since I started going to all these concerts with mostly Swedish artists that is also what I almost exclusively have listened to, although my taste is much wider than that. Spotify likes to recommend me stuff, but I rarely know why. Nor can I figure out why an artists Spotifypage are allowed to mix in other artists with the same name. I understand if the Spotify people don’t have the time, but the record company should make sure that the page looks as good as possible, they are the only one’s making money on this venture. And if you recommend similar artists to the one I’m currently listening to they should be relevant. If I listen to Roxette, it’s likely that I would be interested in Per Gessle, Marie Fredriksson, Gyllene Tider and even Son of a Plumber more than Bonnie Tyler and Ace of Base.
The last couple of weeks I’ve been trying out Apple music, it’s free the first three months, just upgrade your IOS and sign up, (I believe it’s also available for Android). There are som bugs, most notably for people with large collections of music in iTunes (google that first), but all I have really been doing is using “For you” where some nice guy or some übersmart bot have curated playlists just for me.
What makes these playlists so good are they are made to fit the time of day, i. e. softer music in the morning, but also the fact that they consist of a lot of favorites and a few surprises. Without the favorites I’d probably never would have hit the play button in the first place, even if my trust in those playlists get bigger with time. I have found more new music these last few weeks than I have the last years. I feel excitement about music again quite simply. One drawback about it is the lack of Swedish music in the recommendations, the only Swedes have been Imperiet and Roxette. I’m guessing that with more data about my listening habits those playlists will only get better.
